Short answer: Da Nang and Hue are about 100 km apart. The fastest door-to-door option is a private car through the Hai Van tunnel (about 2h30). The cheapest scenic option is the coastal train (about 2h30–3h, from roughly 77,000 VND). If you want the famous views, take a private car over the Hai Van Pass with photo stops. Below we compare every option honestly, with estimated 2026 prices, so you can pick the one that fits your budget, luggage and time.

Option 1: The train – cheap, comfortable and scenic
The railway hugs the coast between Da Nang and Lang Co, and for many travellers this is the most relaxing way to see the Hai Van area. The line is about 103 km long and most trains take 2h30 to 3h; the fastest SE trains are a little under 2h30.
- Where to sit: travelling north from Da Nang to Hue, sit on the right-hand side for the sea views. Going back south, sit on the left.
- Classes: soft seat (air-conditioned) is enough for this short ride. Berths cost a little more and are worth it only on night trains.
- Tickets: book on the official Vietnam Railways website (dsvn.vn) or at Da Nang station. Resellers often charge two or three times the official fare.
- Timing: daytime departures are the ones to choose if you want to see anything. Night trains save a hotel night but you will miss the coast.
The slower Heritage train (Di San Mien Trung) runs the same route with a stop at Lang Co lagoon, regional food and live music on board. It suits travellers who see the ride itself as the day's activity. Schedules and fares change often, so check them on the official site a few days ahead.

Option 2: Shuttle bus or limousine van
Several companies run 9–16 seat limousine vans and sleeper buses between Da Nang, Hoi An and Hue. Most take the Hai Van tunnel, so you save time but skip the views. Expect 2h30–3h and roughly 150,000–350,000 VND per person, depending on the vehicle and whether hotel pick-up is included.
Good to know:
- Pick-ups can be 30–60 minutes late in peak season. Do not book a bus if you need to make a fixed time in Hue.
- Large suitcases may cost extra or not fit in smaller vans. Ask when you book.
- Drop-off is usually at an office or central street in Hue, not always your hotel door.
Option 3: Private car – the easiest door-to-door choice
For two or more people, a private car is often the best value per hour saved. The driver collects you at your hotel or at Da Nang Airport and drops you at your accommodation in Hue in about 2h30 via the tunnel.
Our own Da Nang airport and city transfer service lists Hue from about US$75 per car, with the scenic Hai Van Pass route for about US$15 extra. On the pass route the driver stops at the summit and can add a coffee break at Lang Co. Allow 3h30 to 5h if you want relaxed photo stops.
A private car makes most sense when you:
- arrive at Da Nang Airport and want to go straight to Hue;
- travel with children, older relatives or a lot of luggage;
- want the Hai Van Pass views but do not want to ride a motorbike.
What about going by motorbike?
Motorbikes cannot use the Hai Van tunnel, so riders must take the pass road. It is steep, often foggy from September to December and shared with trucks and tour buses. For most visitors, a private car on the Hai Van Pass route gives the same views and stops with far less risk, and your luggage travels with you.
What about flying?
There is no practical flight between Da Nang and Hue. They are too close together, and the road and rail options are faster once you count airport time.
Best stops on the scenic route
- Nam O and the Da Nang bay viewpoints, just before the climb.
- Hai Van Quan (the summit gate), an old fortification with views on both sides. There is an entry fee; see our Hai Van Pass guide for current details.
- Lang Co lagoon and beach, a good place for lunch with fresh seafood.
- Elephant Springs or Lap An lagoon, if you have time and the weather is dry.
Which option should you choose?
- Tight budget, solo: the train in a soft seat, daytime departure.
- Couple or family with luggage: a private car. Add the Hai Van Pass route if the weather is clear.
- Want the views: a private car on the Hai Van Pass route, with stops at the summit and Lang Co.
- Arriving by air: a private car straight from Da Nang Airport to your Hue hotel.
Weather matters more than most people expect. The pass is often in cloud during the rainy season (roughly September to December). Check our Da Nang weather by month guide before you choose the scenic route.
Arriving in Hue
Most hotels are on the south bank of the Perfume River, a short ride from the Imperial City. Plan at least one full day for the citadel and the royal tombs. Our Hue travel guide has one- to three-day itineraries.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Hue from Da Nang?
About 100 km by road and 103 km by rail. Driving through the Hai Van tunnel takes around 2h30. The pass road is shorter on the map but slower because of the bends and stops.
Is the train or the bus better from Da Nang to Hue?
The train is usually better. It is similar in price, more comfortable and runs along the coast, while most buses use the tunnel. Choose a bus only if hotel pick-up matters more to you than the views.
Can I do Da Nang to Hue as a day trip?
Yes, but it is a long day: about 5–6 hours of travel in total. Leave early and focus on the Imperial City plus one tomb. Staying one night in Hue is much more relaxing.
Can I go straight from Da Nang Airport to Hue?
Yes. A private transfer can collect you at arrivals and drive you directly to your hotel in Hue in about 2h30 via the tunnel, or longer on the scenic pass route.
How much is a private car from Da Nang to Hue?
Expect from about US$75 per car via the tunnel, plus about US$15 for the Hai Van Pass route with stops (October 2026 prices on our transfer page).
