Hue to Da Nang by private car
Your driver collects you at your Hue hotel at the time you choose. The road runs south along Highway 1 past rice fields and fishing villages, then you decide: over the mountain or under it.
The Hai Van Pass route (about 3 hours)

Stops of up to 90 minutes in total are included. From September to December the summit is often in cloud; your driver checks on the morning and you can switch to the tunnel at no cost.
The Hai Van tunnel route (about 2 hours)
The 6.3 km tunnel cuts under the mountain and is the fastest road between Hue and Da Nang. Choose it when you have a flight to catch, in heavy rain, or if anyone in your group gets car-sick on bends.
Hue to Da Nang Airport: when to leave
Many travellers finish in Hue and fly out of Da Nang, because it has more international flights. A private car can drive you from your Hue hotel straight to Da Nang Airport at the same $60 / $70 per car.
International flight: leave Hue about 5 hours before departure on the tunnel route, or 6 hours if you want the pass.
Domestic flight: leave about 4 hours before on the tunnel route.
This leaves time for traffic in Da Nang and for check-in. Going the other way after you land? The same car can take you from Da Nang Airport straight to Hue.
Train from Hue to Da Nang
The coastal railway is cheaper and scenic. Heading south, sit on the left-hand side of the train for the sea views around the Hai Van Pass. Book on the official Vietnam Railways site (dsvn.vn) or at Hue station. Remember that Da Nang station is in the city centre, so you still need a ride to a beach hotel or to Hoi An.
