Hoi An to Hue: Private Car, Hai Van Pass, Train or Bus (2026)

Short answer: Hoi An and Hue are about 125–130 km apart, and Hoi An has no railway station or airport of its own. The easiest way to make the trip is a private car: about 2h45–3h through the Hai Van tunnel, or 4–5 hours if you take the scenic Hai Van Pass with stops at Marble Mountains, the summit and Lang Co. The cheapest way is an open-tour bus or limousine van (4–5 hours). The train is lovely but starts from Da Nang, so you first need a 40–50 minute ride to the station. Below we compare every option with estimated 2026 prices.

Prices are estimates gathered in October 2026 from operators and local booking sites. They change with season, vehicle size and demand, so always confirm before you book.

Option 1: Private car – the easiest door-to-door choice

For two or more people, a private car is usually the best balance of price, comfort and time. The driver picks you up at your hotel in the Ancient Town, An Bang or Cua Dai and drops you at your hotel in Hue. There is no transfer in Da Nang, no waiting for other passengers and your luggage stays with you.

You choose the route when you book:

  • Through the Hai Van tunnel (about 2h45–3h). The fastest option. Good if you are tired, travelling in the rainy season or have a check-in time to make.
  • Over the Hai Van Pass (about 4–5h with stops). The driver leaves the highway north of Da Nang and climbs the old coastal road to the summit gate, then descends to Lang Co. Most travellers say this is one of the best drives in Vietnam.
  • Sightseeing transfer (6h or more). Add Marble Mountains, the Lady Buddha at Son Tra or a lunch stop at Lang Co lagoon. You turn a transfer day into a sightseeing day.

On local booking sites, a 4–7 seat car from Hoi An to Hue typically costs about 1,450,000–1,850,000 VND depending on the route and stops (roughly US$55–75). Our own private car and airport transfer service lists Da Nang to Hue from about US$75 per car, with the Hai Van Pass route about US$15 extra. Because Hoi An adds roughly 30 km, we quote Hoi An pick-ups individually: send us your hotel and date by WhatsApp and we will confirm a fixed price per car, tolls and fuel included.

Option 2: Open-tour bus or limousine van

Several companies run buses and 9–16 seat limousine vans from Hoi An to Hue every day, usually one morning and one afternoon departure. Expect 4–5 hours and about 150,000–300,000 VND per person.

  • Most buses use the Hai Van tunnel, so you will not see the pass.
  • Many stop in Da Nang to collect more passengers, which is why the trip takes longer than by car.
  • Hotel pick-up in Hoi An is often included, but drop-off in Hue may be at an office rather than your hotel.
  • Large suitcases may not fit in the smaller vans. Ask when you book.

The bus is the right choice if you travel alone, pack light and are not in a hurry.

Option 3: Train from Da Nang

There is no railway station in Hoi An. To take the train, you first travel about 30 km to Da Nang station, which takes 40–50 minutes by Grab, taxi or private car. From there the coastal line to Hue takes about 2h30–3h, and soft-seat tickets start from about 77,000 VND on the official Vietnam Railways site.

The train runs right along the sea between Da Nang and Lang Co. Travelling north, sit on the right-hand side for the views. A slower heritage train with a stop at Lang Co also runs on this line; schedules change often, so check a few days ahead.

Door to door, the train journey is about 3h30–4h30 once you add the transfer and waiting time. It is a great experience, but not faster than a car. Our Da Nang to Hue train guide covers times, fares and seat choice in detail.

Option 4: Motorbike or Easy Rider

Motorbikes are not allowed in the Hai Van tunnel, so riders have to cross the pass. The road is steep, can be foggy from September to December and is shared with trucks and tour buses. Only consider riding yourself if you are an experienced rider with a valid licence and good insurance. An Easy Rider (a local driver who rides while you sit on the back) is a safer way to feel the open road, and your bags can travel separately by car.

The best stops between Hoi An and Hue

  • Marble Mountains – five limestone hills with caves and pagodas, about 20 minutes north of Hoi An. Allow 1–2 hours.
  • My Khe Beach and the Dragon Bridge – a quick look at Da Nang on the way through.
  • Hai Van Quan – the old fortified gate at the top of the pass, with views over Da Nang Bay on one side and Lang Co on the other. See our Hai Van Pass guide for fees and timing.
  • Lang Co lagoon and beach – a good place for a seafood lunch.
  • Lap An lagoon – calm water and oyster farms, best on a clear afternoon.

Leaving Hoi An by 8:00 lets you see the pass before clouds build up and still reach Hue mid-afternoon.

Which option should you choose?

  • Couple or family with luggage: a private car. Take the pass if the weather is clear, the tunnel if it is not.
  • Want the views: a private car over the Hai Van Pass with stops, or the coastal train from Da Nang.
  • Solo on a budget: an open-tour bus or limousine van.
  • Short on time: a private car through the tunnel. It is the only option under three hours.

The weather matters. From roughly September to December the pass is often in cloud or rain, and the tunnel is the sensible choice. Check our Central Vietnam weather by month before you decide.

The same options work in reverse, and our Da Nang to Hue guide covers trips that start in the city or at the airport.
