The drive south, stop by stop
Heading south from Hue, the best views come in the right order: lagoon first, then the bay, then the pass. Leaving your hotel around 8:00 works well.
Lap An lagoon (about 1 hour from Hue). A calm lagoon with oyster farms below the mountains, at its best in soft morning light. A 10–15 minute photo stop is enough.
Lang Co (15 minutes later). A long sandy bay between the sea and the lagoon. Good for a coffee, or an early seafood lunch if you started late. See our Lang Co guide.
Hai Van Pass summit. The old road climbs in hairpin bends to Hai Van Quan, the fortified gate at the top, with Lang Co behind you and Da Nang Bay ahead. The gate has a small entrance fee.
Down into Da Nang. The road drops along the bay into the city. If you have time, ask for a short stop at My Khe Beach for lunch.
Marble Mountains (optional). Five limestone hills with caves and pagodas, 20 minutes before Hoi An. Allow 1–2 hours; the ticket is paid separately. Read our Marble Mountains guide.
Stops at Lap An, Lang Co and the summit are included, up to 90 minutes in total. You arrive in Hoi An mid-afternoon, in time to check in and walk the Ancient Town as the lanterns come on.

Pass or tunnel?
The Hai Van tunnel is quick and avoids the hairpins, but you see nothing of the coast. The pass adds about an hour of driving and gives you one of the best coastal views in Vietnam. Our advice:
Clear day: take the pass.
Heavy rain or low cloud: take the tunnel. The summit will be in fog and the road is slower. From about September to December this happens often; check the weather by month.
Not sure: decide on the morning. Tell the driver at pick-up, the price is the same either way.
Coming from Hue Airport (Phu Bai)
Phu Bai Airport is about 15 km south of Hue, on the way to Hoi An. If you are flying into Hue and want to go straight to Hoi An, we can meet you at arrivals with a name sign and drive on over the pass or through the tunnel. Send us your flight number on WhatsApp for the price; the driver tracks your flight.
Train or bus instead?
Train: Hoi An has no railway station. The coastal train from Hue to Da Nang takes about 2h30–3h, and soft seats start from about 77,000 VND. Travelling south, sit on the left-hand side for the sea views around Lang Co and the Hai Van Pass. From Da Nang station it is another 30 km to Hoi An, 40–50 minutes by car or Grab.
Bus or limousine van: several companies run from Hue to Hoi An, usually in the morning and early afternoon, for about 150,000–300,000 VND per person. Most use the tunnel and stop in Da Nang, so the trip takes 4–5 hours. Hotel drop-off in Hoi An is not always included, and large suitcases may not fit in small vans.
